Essay 138: A letter to my officials- On the COVID Vaccine Mandate

“With the shutdown of the port, all Boston business came to a halt. All work stopped. Half the people of Boston- some 7,000- went jobless. Soon they would not even be allowed to fish in their own waters.”

Two if by Sea by Leonard Everett Fisher

I was reading this book about the American Revolution to my daughter today and the parallels between the tyrannical British Government of that time and our current government was so evident, I was shocked. Just as the Patriots viewed the King’s orders as the “Intolerable Acts”, I find our government’s vaccine mandate intolerable.

I am vaccinated. So is my husband whose medical history puts him into the high-risk category. We wear masks diligently. We have canceled work trips. We even closed our business BEFORE we were required to in 2020. We have stayed closed since as it is impossible to abide by social distancing rules in our line of business.

I still strongly oppose the idea of a vaccine passport as it violates the very foundational principle our country was based upon: FREEDOM.
It felt wrong to have to show my vaccine card and I.D to enter the library because it IS wrong!

What is happening to America, whose founding fathers put their lives on the line so that they and we could be free?
Free to do commerce. Free from overtaxation. Free to elected and fair representation.

Why are businesses coerced into enforcing a mandate they do not approve in order to continue to operate?
Why are people losing their jobs simply for claiming their right to decide on whether or not to undergo a medical treatment?
Why does a mandate apply to citizens but not to their representatives?
Why is it called a Vaccine Passport and not a COVID Vaccine Passport?
Why is it a Health Pass and not a COVID specific Pass?
What else is coming our way?

The madness must stop. The government must remember its proper place. It is there to ensure an ordered society, not an oppressed one. It is there to represent its citizens, not to rule over them.

I am not one to put much stock into conspiracy theories, but the current events sure point to our government officials taking advantage of this crisis to claim power that is not theirs to claim.

Our constitutional rights were defined to prevent this. They simply must be upheld.

I understand that our generation had never before encountered a pandemic. We, the citizens, and you, our representatives, are doing the best we can to navigate these uncharted waters. But you cannot choose to set aside our country’s values, even temporarily, for the supposed greater good. Straying from principles is a slippery slope. Good intentions do not ensure a positive outcome.

It is time to give back to the American people the freedom their forefathers fought so valiantly for.

  1. Thank you. It’s a relief that so many people don’t just buy into what the government is saying and are not okay with handing over their freedom! I feel the same way, and likewise my husband and I are both vaccinated. Agree with every single word that you wrote. Thank you for saying it.
